Human and Chimps’ Connections
Elizabeth Berg once said, “We are readers probably more than anything else.” Since time is a limited resource, we should carefully choose the articles we give that time to. Frans B.M de Waal’s article about human connection, titled “Monkey See, Monkey Do, Monkey Connect,” is worth your time. The author’s background contributes to the quality of this article.
Frans B.M de Waal is a published author who trained in biology and is the director of the Living Links Center at Yerkes National Primate Research Center. His purpose is just to inform readers about homo sapien social behavior. De Waal likes to use detail and likes to be funny in his articles. He speaks directly to readers and uses appropriate average day reader vocabulary. De Waal did his personal research, and he is an expert, but readers don’t have access to his sources.
In De Waal’s article, there are no section titles. The article title gives some clues about the content, but it is lacking subheadings for clarity. The introduction starts off by saying that laughter intrigues him the most because of how it spreads. This is a good way to start off an article. De Waal was well organized throughout the article because he smoothly transitions through different topics. He has clear points that connect in a logical order to prove the main claim.
The claim was well introduced, and the conclusion brought it back well. He finished with a good clincher. De Waal is intrigued by how primates connect to one another. He uses examples of human and monkey behavior to explain connections. The organization of the article works well for this.
